Good morning everyone and happy Saturday!
I know it may seem cliche but Saturday’s are no doubt my favorite day of the week. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve now become the typical new-balance lawn loving, grill master dad or what…
But Saturday’s just give me the right amount of joy and relaxation I need after a long week. Especially Saturdays in the summer.
You see, one of my favorite past times growing up (and even to this day) has been going to car shows with my dad. You just can’t beat walking around with a nice cup of coffee on a perfect Saturday morning “ooing and awing” at all the pristine Chevelles, Mustangs (Fastbacks, not coups), Cuda’s, and Camarro’s parked perfectly on the car lot.

It’s a beauty and sight to see. Yet, this year, I’ve begun to notice an odd newcomer at some of these shows. And while they definitely stick out like a sore thumb when placed right next to a slick 1978 Trans Am…
They end up kind of growing on ya a bit. Of course, I’m talking about Elon’s absolute unit of a truck: The Cybertruck.

As I’m sure you know, this angular beast of a vehicle has been the subject of many a meme and heated debate since it first rolled onto the scene. Some say it’s futuristic, others say it looks like a truck made with 1990’s Playstation graphics (If you played Tomb Raider back in the day you know what I’m talking about).

But again, after seeing so many of them this year - it no doubt has a weird charm that grows on you.You know, kind of like that one song you hated at first but now can’t stop playing on repeat.
So with a reputation like that, how in the world did this stainless steel oddball possibly climb to the top of the EV pickup charts?

Well according to Tesla’s rather murky data, the company delivered 21,551 of its premium models globally in Q2. This mix includes the Model S, Model X, and, of course, the Cybertruck. While Tesla hasn’t broken down the exact numbers for the Cybertruck, some clever sleuthing suggests it might have outsold the competition.
Looking at the numbers, Ford reported selling 7,902 units of its F-150 Lightning, while GM and Rivian’s numbers were even lower. Tesla’s elusive data hints that somewhere between 8,000 and 9,000 Cybertrucks might have been delivered in Q2. If that’s true, the Cybertruck could indeed be the top dog in the EV pickup world for this quarter. Oh how the turntables turn…

Funny enough, another big clue comes from Tesla’s recalls. Yeah, you heard me—recalls. In late June, Tesla recalled 11,688 Cybertrucks over a wonky windshield wiper issue, implying that there are at least that many Cybertrucks out and about. Considering they reportedly sold just 2,803 in Q1, that’s a massive jump.
So in theory, if the math is right (and it usually is, thanks to calculators), this suggests Tesla ramped up production by a whopping 182%.

However, with those surprisingly optimistic numbers of hope, Elon’s not just sitting on his hands, either. Tesla’s cranking up Cybertruck production, aiming for a weekly rate of 1,300 units, with hopes to hit 2,500 by the end of the year.
The goal? Make this pointy juggernaut a common sight on American roads. And with prices starting at $79,990 for the all-wheel drive version, it’s clear Tesla’s targeting the higher end of the market, at least until a cheaper rear-wheel drive version drops in 2025.

So obviously, despite its quirks and criticisms, the Cybertruck definitely has a “je ne sais quoi” aura about it. With it’s “insane performance,” “insane looks,” and it’s made by a company run by a guy who’s, well, a bit insane himself - there’s no denying that the Cybertruck is, in its own bizarre way, just plain cool.
And while it may be weird to see at a car show this morning, it definitely fills the role of turning heads and sparking conversations. Which is kind of the whole reason, you bring your classic car to the car show right? Hell yeah.

So, with all the numbers laid out… has the Cybertruck really become America’s best-selling EV pickup in Q2? While we can’t say for sure without Tesla’s exact numbers, the puzzle pieces suggest it’s a strong possibility. And if it hasn’t clinched the top spot yet, it’s certainly gunning for it.
So whether you think it’s a modern marvel or a metallic monstrosity, one thing’s for sure: The Cybertruck is not only here to stay, but it could just be the new vehicle of choice for guys like me with little man syndrome. Sigh…
